Endothelial Function Assessment
Testing Your Arteries
- No Radiation
There are two types of tests to test the endothelium. Endopat test and Vendys Endothelix test. The endothelium is very important as this is the very site where heart disease begins. It is a condition called vascular dysfunction. But first let’s start off by talking about the endothelium and why it is important to get tested.
What is the Endothelium?
It is the inner lining of the blood vessels and is responsible to ensure smooth flow of the blood. Normal function of the endothelium protects the blood vessels from the formation of atherosclerosis (thickening or hardening of the artery), a cause of cardiovascular disease.
What is vascular dysfunction?
It is on of the earliest clinically detectable stages of cardiovascular disease, which includes coronary artery disease, strokes, and peripheral artery disease. We also use this test to track the disease process with individuals who do have heart disease.
What are the Benefits of Testing The Endothelial Function Test?
Because stress tests will only show advanced stages of disease an Endopat test will show early signs of endothelial lining concerns in the artery. The test reflects quite well with the progress made with lifestyle changes and adherence to medical therapy within weeks and therefore gives a powerful tool to follow-up on treatment.
How Does Endothelial Function Assessment Work?
For more than a decade Endothelial Dysfunction has been recognized by the medical community as the earliest detectable stage of cardiovascular disease. This test will help assess heart disease risk and alerting patients to initiate preventive steps to keep it from progressing or becoming a deadly killer. Normal Endothelial Function means that arteries function well, and this has been shown to protect blood vessels from atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and plaque build-up.
The Endothelial function tests the body’s ability to regulate blood flow throughout your cardiovascular system. The endothelial function test is a simple, safe, non-invasive, office-based procedure. The entire test takes just 15 minutes. However we will provide a cardiovascular consultation to go over the tests in detail with you.
The small temperature sensors are placed on both index fingers, to monitor the function of your arteries. A blood pressure cuff is placed on the left arm to check blood pressure. Another cuff is placed on the right arm and will be inflated during the test, for 5 minutes, to stop the blood flow to the arm. This is the standard procedure for non-invasively testing the endothelium. The results of your test are immediately available.
Accordingly the Endopat / Vendys test will provide a Vascular Reactivity Index, the health of your arteries, or your endothelial dysfunction.
Clinical Evidence for Endothelial Function Assessment
FDA-clearedand used in pre-eminent clinical institutions, research centers and pharmaceutical clinical phase studies in over 40 countries. It is incorporated into
numerous multi-center and population-based studies such as the Framingham Heart Study. Research using endothelial testing has yielded more than 300 articles in peer- reviewed journals and abstracts.
Who is it for?
It is for patients wishing to know the health of their arteries at any stage of heart disease.
